Bcl-2 is up regulated in human lymphoma with chromosomal t(14:18)(q32;q21) translocation, which is found in 85% of human follicular lymphomas and 20% of diffuse B-cell lymphomas.
The antibody labels Bcl-2 proto-oncogene protein and stains lymphoid tissues. It labels B-cells in mantle zone and interfollicular T-cell areas, but very few cells in the germinal centers.
Bcl-2 positive results aid in the classification of follicular lymphomas and various diffuse lymphoproliferative disease. Follicular lymphoma patients with a Bcl-2 oncogene rearrangement in their tumors have a poor response to therapy than the patients without the rearrangement. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma with Bcl-2 expression had a significantly higher relapse rate and a lower survival than in those without Bcl-2 expression. Bcl-2 is expressed in the basal cells of epithelial tissues. In some epithelial neoplasm, Bcl-2 positive tumors have a better prognosis than Bcl-2 negative ones. |
