The antibody labels estrogen receptor alpha (ER) positive cells.
The human estrogen receptor is a vital regulator of growth and differentiation in the mammary gland and has alpha and beta two forms. In normal tissue, ER exists in epithelial cells of mammary glands, epithelial and myometrium cells of the uterus, luteal endometrium. In carcinomas of the breast, most progesterone receptor (PR) positive tumors are also ER positive, and less than 5% of PR positive tumors are ER negative.
A variety of lesions with epitheloid features may also express ER, including epitheloid smooth muscle tumors, malignant melanoma, meningioma, sclerosing hemangioma, desmoid tumors, thyroid neoplasms, cervical endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer. |
